Many students often find their stay more rewarding if they take an active role in community activities. In recognition of this participation, Tucson International Friends sponsors the Tucson Mayor‘s Awards. The Tucson Mayor‘s Awards are presented each spring to all students who have completed the five requirements outlined below. Students are encouraged to bring their Friendship Partners (Hosts) to the ceremony that is held in City Council chambers or a location close by. A special reception is held following the ceremony.

When you arrive at the University for either the Fall or Winter Semester, the Mayor‘s Award Coordinator will contact you regarding participation in this program.

Eligibility: International Graduate and Undergraduate Students
Timeframe: September through April
Deadline: Spring Semester

• Visit a local school and make a presentation about your country
• Participate in a service project or club meeting of a community service club
• Vote in a campus election or accompany an International Friends friendship partner as s/he votes in an election
• Attend a lecture on campus, which is unrelated to a class assignment and not a course requirement.
• Attend a meeting of a government body (state legislature, city government, etc.)

1. Submit or email the enrollment forms. The Coordinator will email you a tracking form and a calendar of events. As you complete each section, ensure that it is signed and dated by the key contact for each of the 5 requirements.
2. Send any questions to the Mayor‘s Award Coordinator.
3. Activities must be completed by mid-April. The Mayor‘s Award Coordinator will provide you with specific dates.

1. Keep your student(s) motivated. Periodically ask them how they are doing. If you can, invite them to accompany you to a polling place during an election or accompany them to a school presentation.
2. Periodically review their tracking form to ensure the student is on target.
3. Attend the presentation ceremony at the City Council chambers as well as the post-ceremony reception.
